Bearing repair method

2017-08-28

Diagnostics for bearing repair is carried out in the following sequence:

Use a screw puller to remove the inner ring from the shaft;

Determine the bearing defect by inspecting the bearing, checking it for lightness of rotation and noise, and measuring the axial and radial clearance;

Determine whether a complete replacement of the worn part is necessary;

Determine the degree of wear of the bearing by measuring the clearance between the rolling element and the raceway;

The results of all measurements must be compared with the nominal values.

Bearing repair can be divided into 2 types:

Without reassembly of the rolling elements;

With reassembly of the rolling elements.

The first type is used when the diagnosis indicates that the rolling elements of the defective bearing are all right, but the other parts of the bearing are not. The actions during such repair can be different, depending on the defect: from replacement of the outer and inner rings, grinding of their sides or raceways, to boring and replacement of the cage.

The second type of repair is used when defects in the rolling elements are detected and require repair or replacement. For example, when a chamfer is damaged, causing individual balls or rollers to fall out. In this type of repair, the defective bearing must be completely disassembled and all parts must be inspected. Particular attention must be paid during this inspection to whether there are cracks in the transition area between the base and the lintels. The bearing rings and rolling elements should be well ground. The new rolling elements should then be replaced and fitted. Remember that all the rolling elements to be replaced must be of the same diameter and shape as those fitted at the factory.

After the old defective parts have been replaced by new ones and the bearing has been finally assembled, its operation must be re-diagnosed to ensure that the defects have been completely eliminated.
